Long coats in canines are a recessive trait which means the DNA instructions for long coats are easily masked by competing DNA instructions for short coats. The gene for long hair in the French Bulldog breed is called the c.559-560dupGG gene but to make things easier it’s usually simply called the L4 gene, while in the frenchie world it's refered to as the "fluffy gene" hence fluffy french bulldogs.

Long haired French Bulldogs carry two copies (one from each parent) of a recessive long hair gene or "fluffy gene" called L4. Sometimes long haired frenchies with DNA for long hair as L1. While L4 is the standard long hair gene typically associated with the french bulldog breed, L1 usually means that the gene has originated form a different breed. Nevertheless, they will have medium length wavy hair over their ears, head, back and chest, which gives them a fluffy appearance. Regardless of this, they can still be purebred French Bulldogs.

Long haired Frenchies AKA Fluffy Frenchies

Updated: September 16, 2021

Yes, long haired "fluffy" French Bulldogs can be purebred. Although registerable by all main french bulldog registries including AKC, they are not recognised with that trait by the official breed standard, so they can’t be entered to compete at AKC dog shows. Many are unaware that recessive traits like the L4 gene can actually go unnoticed for generations without manifestation. Only if breeders selctively breed in favor of a recessive gene, it remains in a population in relatively low numbers. The odds are very low that two L4 carriers mating without the breeder's knowledge. If that were to happen by chance, even then, the odds of a puppy in the litter turning out fluffy is only 25%.

What can produce a Fluffy French Bulldog based on DNA test results?

Updated: September 16, 2021

Frenchies without the L4 gene will appear like ordinary short haired French Bulldogs. French Bulldogs with just one copy of the L4 gene carry it silently and can subsequently can produce "fluffies" with the right mate that either carries the L4 gene L4/l or is a fluffy (2 copies of L4). These L4 gene carriers have a short coat, but can pass on the long haired gene to their puppies. However, Frenchies with two copies of the L4 gene (one from the sire and one from the dam) will display long coats. Consider also that a puppy that ends up with an L4 from one parent and an L1 from the other parent will also resuly in a long haired french bulldog puppy.
